This photo was taken the day after ceremonies were held to mark the 25th anniversary of the sinking of the US Coast Guard cutter Blackthorn, near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. It was the Coast Guard's worst peacetime disaster, in which 23 of the crew of 50 lost their lives after the cutter ran into a ship three times its size.
A recent St. Petersburg Times article caught up with one of the survivors, giving us a compelling eyewitness story of a routine sail on calm seas that goes horribly wrong so quickly.
